Thrive 2012

My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style

~Maya Angelou

Back in January I decided to ditch the resolutions, which I never much liked anyway, and choose a word to guide my year.

One word. Simple. Straight forward.

Now that we’re just over half way through the year I thought it was a good time to check in and see how my word has been guiding me.

First off, choosing a guiding word has been incredibly powerful for me. In the first couple months of the year I found myself often asking myself “will this help me thrive?” Just that simple question was often enough to get me back on track and moving in the right direction, for me.

  • Will that extra cookie help me thrive? I don’t think so.
  • Will reading through Facebook status updates again help me thrive? Not so much.
  • Will roasted sweet potatoes over a raw spinach salad help me thrive? Yes please!
  • Will taking some time to sit and write things out in my journal help me thrive? Every. Single. Time.

As the months progressed, I drifted away from my word a bit, and had trouble remembering my verbal touch-stone. But, when I caught a glimpse of the small sign I made back in January (which you see up above) it helped pull me back to center.

Now, as for whether I’ve been thriving, I can confidently reply YES!!!

One of the big pieces of thriving for me, though I never stated it directly, was a deep desire to feel rooted. Back in January my husband and I were still tossing around ideas of a big move, meaning across states, reaching towards the west coast. While I was willingly engaged in thoughts of a big move I knew that deep down what I wanted, even needed, was to just put down some roots

Without roots a plant can’t thrive. I knew I needed some roots.

Now, 6 months later, we’ve settled in and bought a house, committed to stay in Ohio for a while. And it feels fantastic.

Our new home is the most obvious illustration of how I’m thriving this year.

There are lots of other ways too, like the way I’ve gained momentum with my business, connected with amazing women through my very first e-course, as well as started making wonderful local connections.

Looking forward to the second half of the year I will be focusing on thriving from the inside out. While there’s been lots of amazing things in the first half of 2012, some pieces have been out of balance, mainly with my own self care. Creating a self care rhythm for thriving will be a major focus in the second half of the year.

Did you choose a guiding word? How is it serving you? Or perhaps you made some intentions or resolutions. How are you doing here at the just-over-half-way mark?

I am so glad you have been able to live by your word in such real and tangible ways. I have been picking a single word for a few years now. This year’s was “hope” for me. I needed a word that simply and peacefully reminded me to think positively. It has been such a good word for me. Concerned about national politics? HOPE. Worried about the magnitude of work we are putting into our daughter’s school? HOPE. Indecisive about big life changes? HOPE. Uncertain about what next? HOPE (is the thing with feathers). It is a word that reminds me I can take flight.

Hope, yes. I remember your choice for this year. Such a good one for you with all the shifts and questions. Isn’t it wonderful how one word can act as such a wise guide? Love this practice so much. Sometimes I will even choose a word for the day if I’m feeling the need for some additional guidance.
