It Takes Courage

It takes courage to be who you really are. ~ e.e. cummings

It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.

~ e.e. cummings

Since I was a teenager I’ve had this underlying fear that all of my opinions really belong to someone else.

  • My favorite color was because someone else liked it first and I followed along.
  • The music I listened to was influenced by my friends (most likely boys I had crushes on) and not what I really liked.
  • The clothes I wore were the same as everyone else’s, whether I really liked them or not.

I always felt like I was a sort of chameleon, blending in to those around me. What I really wanted to be was a stand-out. But I was too scared.

Sometimes it feels easy to go along with the crowd, to let my opinions blend into the ones around me. It’s easier to say yes, to say I like it too, to be a sheep following along with the herd.

Until it isn’t easy anymore, and going along with the crowd, or even one person, feels like giving up a piece of me.

Now, it feels harder to go along than it does to be myself.

The new struggle is remembering that living my life in my way does not hurt anyone else. Different does not mean bad. Different is simply different.

Growing up means growing into myself. Growing up means being who I really am.

I’ll tell you, it feels better and better every day and I would not have it any other way.
