Clean Food Challenge Day 1

November 14, 2011 4 Comments

Today is the first day of the Clean Food Challenge!

Are you joining me for a week of Clean eating?

After getting a bit off track from my typically pretty healthy eating habits, I decided to recharge my eating habits and clean out my system a bit. This week I will be eating no:

  • Processed Food
  • Refined Sugar
  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • Wheat/Gluten
  • Alcohol

Yes, I will be restricting what I eat. But, it isn’t about the restriction (although right now it feels like it). This week is all about eating lots of amazing, nutrient rich, real, clean food. I will also drink 1 Gallon of water every day.

Yesterday I stocked our kitchen with lots of goodies: broccoli, cauliflower, kale, sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa. All my dinners are planned through Sunday and everything is lined up and ready to go.

Here’s how I will start my day tomorrow.

Breakfast will be:

  • One cup of coffee with Almond Milk (I will drink one cup of coffee every morning, which is a reasonable compromise considering my very full days and my recent high caffeine intake. I’m just not willing to go through complete caffeine withdrawal right now.)
  • Steel Cut Oats with Cinnamon and Maple Syrup

Morning Snack:

  • Green Juice

Joining me this week are:

  1. Imene
  2. Jacki
  3. Heather
  4. Shannon

Throughout the week I will share how things are going for me, along with some of my dinners and recipes. Any of you who are also doing the Challenge, I would love if you would discuss your experiences in the comments. How are things going? What are you eating? Any recipes to share?

I’m sick with a cold, so I started yesterday. Still going to do the full week, though. Even on my birthday! 🙂

First thing I did was make a large batch of lentil soup. It’s in a container in the fridge, and I’ll just dip into it when I’m hungry. It’s hearty, filling and tasty.

I have a 750ml water bottle that is with me at all times. I typically fill it full and drain it 2-3 times a day anyway. So I normally drink about a gallon of water daily, so that’s not a stretch for me.

Tip: If you are not a big water drinker, try putting a few slices of cucumber, lemon or lime in a pitcher of water and put it in the fridge. Remove whatever you put in the water after a few hours. It makes the water more palatable if you’re not used to it. Unsweetened green tea is also good to encourage more water consumption.

I have a good juicer and stocked up on fruits and veggies to juice. Pineapple, grapefruit, blueberries, carrots, kale, Swiss chard, celery and tomatoes.

Sorry to hear that you have a cold Jacki! Also, I’m impressed that you will be doing the challenge for your birthday. That’s dedication!

I plan on making some soup this week too. I have trouble eating a lot of cold/raw foods and warm, hearty soups are just the thing for me.

Love the water drinking tip. I like to put a few slices of fresh ginger in my water sometimes in addition to your suggestions. I’m really bad about drinking water during the day so the Challenge is a great reminder for me. All the water makes me feel sooooo much better!
