A Guiding Word for 2012

The New Year marks the time to make resolutions for so many people. We’re just over two weeks into the new year and I can’t help but wonder how many resolutions have already been broken.

I’ve never been much for making resolutions. I’ve always been more inclined to make goals and intentions for the new year.

This year, I’m trying something new. This year I have chosen a guiding word to lead me through the year. It’s an idea I’ve seen before, and again this year. She chose a word. So did she. A guiding word for her too. She may be the one who started it all (though I’m not entirely sure).

This year I joined in. Here is how I went about making my choice.

I took some time at the end of December to look back on 2011, all the highs and lows and in betweens. 2011 was a really amazing year for me. I launched Sparrow Magazine, I created this space, and I started my personal coaching business. My son started Kindergarten. My daughter started preschool. My husband started a new job. Lots of new things, lots of learning, many busy days and nights.

At the end of 2011 I was feeling scattered and a bit overwhelmed from having to wear so many hats. Editor. Business owner. Personal coach. Mama. Wife. Friend.

Poised on the beginning of a new year I thought long and hard about what I want in 2012.

I want to feel grounded.

I want my business to grow.

I want to focus on one thing at a time as much as possible.

I want to support my family. I want to support myself.

I want success. I want fun. I want beauty.

And my word came to me.

I want to THRIVE.

My guiding word for 2012 is Thrive.

Already, I feel my word clearing my path. When I’m feeling overwhelmed by something, I simply ask myself “What does it take to Thrive?” and I know what I should do. When I’m feeling scattered I simply say “Thrive” quietly to myself. And then I calm down and move in the right direction.

Thrive.

Did you set any goals or resolutions for 2012? Did you chose a guiding word?
